He was My Big Brother

Growing up, he made me stronger, better and faster. I never for once doubted I could be and do everything he could. He was my first best friend. He was my protector, my secret keeper, my biggest advocate and my loudest critic.

He was my big brother.

We rode motorcycles, horses and bikes together. We milked goats, topped tobacco and put up stock at our family grocery store. We laid in the field staring at clouds and explored the woods – these same woods my kids love – together.

He was my big brother.

And one of the best things he ever did for me was to bring his good friend, Ernie Mayo – who was almost 8 years older than me – around. I was 16 when Ernie got my attention and we married 2 years later.

He was happy for us and was in our wedding.

He was my big brother.

He loved hunting, fishing, motorcycles and Pickup trucks. He loved working with my Daddy at Roland’s Barbeque Restuarant in Beaufort, he loved working on the scallop boats off New England and catching crabs off Alaska. He was the great adventurous Uncle and he loved my children.

He was my big brother.

Roland Maye Humphrey III, known as R.M. to all who knew him, died 14 years ago. Today is his birthday.

He was my big brother.

He is missed.
